Data Warehouse Pilot a Success

The White Plains School District is the first in the country to use the eScholar Complete Data Warehouse™ software program for teacher-level reporting purposes, thanks to the efforts of staff at the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center Data Warehouse Department who worked closely with them to make the initiative a success.

The pilot project, which began earlier this year, involved teachers in all of the district’s middle and elementary schools. With the new software, teachers can view online and on-demand individual state assessment results, all of which are provided securely at the database level.

For the past two years, the district has been interested in conducting such a project, and worked with the LHRIC to bring it to fruition. Previously, such information was available only to district administrators and building principals, explained Joe Fitzgerald, manager of Systems Integration at the LHRIC and the initiative’s project manager.

The data now available to teachers at the White Plains Schools includes a profile of each child, benchmarks that serve as a reference for both open-ended and multiple choice test questions, and an item analysis of how students scored on each test.

“I think this project was a success and one that will truly impact instruction at our schools,” said Lucy Roman, coordinator of Administrative and Instructional Technology for the White Plains Schools.

By making data easily accessible to teachers, the district will be able to address a number of issues, explained Roman, including the types of teaching strategies that work best in the classroom and those that work best for each child. This is also a tool that advances a teacher’s ability to differentiate instruction, she noted.

Data Warehouse Manager Mark Samis said the department hopes to make the service available to other districts in the 2008-09 school year. “We are very excited about this opportunity and how we can make a difference to the classroom teacher,” he said.
